From the hot, humid markets of Dar es Salaam to the bustling streets of Nairobi, this refurb project was an extraordinary experience from conceptualization to completion.

Many people ask what my favourite property is in the Asilia Africa portfolio. Without a doubt, I’ll always say Rubondo Island on Lake Victoria.

Asilia Africa operates Rubondo Island Camp, an 8 bedroomed lodge nestled on the beachfront forest of Rubondo Island, Lake Victoria. The camp has a Robinson Crusoe feel to it. It peeps out from the thick forest and lines the sandy beach banks of the lake.

The brief was simple: to elevate the existing lodge's interiors for a fresh, contemporary look, using as many East African suppliers and fundis as possible.

I created a network of talented artisans who worked their magic and helped me bring this brief to life. We road transferred all the interiors to Mwanza, from there we loaded all the gear onto two big boats and ferried the items across the lake. After many hours of cruising the croc-infested waters and managing to avoid a heavy storm, it all arrived safely in camp. If you're travelling to Tanzania, I highly recommend that you add Rubondo Island to the top of your list.
