Standards documentation
As head of Styles and Standards for Asilia Africa in Tanzania, I was asked to give this camp a soft refurb. We kept to the same bohemian, Moroccan style but added contemporary decor and operational items.
When I was asked to refurbish Kimondo Migration Camp, I had to take into account that it moves location twice a year. It spends half its time in the Southern Serengeti for the wildebeest birthing season and half its time in the Northern Serengeti for the crossing season. Due to all the moving, the furniture and fittings of this camp had to be robust. It had to withstand being deconstructed and packed into large trucks and then driven by road to its new location. If you've ever been to the Serengeti, you'll know that the roads are not in great condition and the furniture always took a knock after a trip. I would have to arrange a furniture 'doctor' to be on site to resurrect any furniture that had fallen fate due to the corrigations. I designed the furniture so that it could pack flat or fold. It had to be minimalist but durable. I sourced all the items from East African suppliers and fundis as we always tried to support local businesses.
